No, unless you drive a smart fortwo car we don't recommend you try fitting your car in a 10x10 self storage unit. Even hatchbacks and compact cars are too large to fit. We have larger, dedicated storage units for vehicles and parking spaces if you need one. A
10x20 vehicle storage unit provides enough space for most cars and trucks.
How many boxes fit in 10x10 storage units?
Calculating how many boxes a 10x10 self storage unit can hold, is difficult. If you chose to store only med-sized boxes with dimensions of about 20” by 20”, you could store about 144 boxes in a 10x10 unit! But less than 100 boxes is more realistic, giving you room at the top, to close the door and you need to create an aisle to access boxes all the way to the back of your space. If you plan to pack boxes that tall make sure you have heavy duty ones so they don’t crush the bottom ones.
Most storage renters put a combination of items like couches, desks, chairs and shelves. The other items you choose to store in your 10x10 unit will impact the total number of boxes you can fit.
How do you pack a 10x10 storage unit?
Packing efficiently can help maximize the available space in a 10x10 storage unit, fitting the items from about three full bedrooms. Keep in mind that Olympic Self Storage packing recommendations are guidelines, not rules. If you store furniture or large boxes, the number of items you can pack in your 10x10 storage unit may differ from other renters. Follow these steps for guidance during the packing process:
- Create and maintain a list of all your items and boxes. Label everything appropriately. Organization is key.
- Select a couple of standard box sizes. This makes it easier to stack boxes evenly and strategically.
- Box everything you can. Loose items are hard to store and don’t pack evenly.
- You can use free-standing shelving to maximize a storage area, allowing you to stack items vertically.
- Use covers for your mattress and furniture to prevent scuffs or scratches and help fend off unwanted dust bunnies.
What size moving truck should I get for a 10x10 storage unit?
Regardless of if you've rented a 10x10 storage unit for bonus garage space or to easily move to your new apartment, these units are popular for good reason. The shape, size and number of items you intend to store impacts the exact size of the moving vehicle you need, generally a 15-foot moving truck is a great size to consider.
Be aware that packing a moving truck and storing your items in a 10x10 storage unit involve different storage processes and requirements. When packing a moving truck, you don’t necessarily need space to move around. In a 10x10 storage unit, you’ll likely want extra space for access. Before renting a moving vehicle or a self storage unit, it’s always a good idea to plot out and measure the number of items you plan to store.
